I live in northern Alabama in an area that used to be wooded; most of the trees were cleared away. Very small, 2-4" plants come up in my yard and flower beds. The plant begins with two heart shaped leaves on a red stem. The next set of leaves that appear look like photos of "leaves of three" poison ivy. I pull and discard the plants before they grow larger. I wish someone would post a photo or description of a very young plant. Also, knowing whether or not the stem is red would be a great help.

It does not sound like that plant is part of the poison ivy, oak or sumac family. We have pictures of the plants here for you to reference on our poison plant identification page and if you have a smart phone we have many pictures for reference in our app.
