Outdoor activities to help you and yours shake the winter time blues… outdoor family activities

It's about that time of year that we are DESPERATE for even the smallest ray of sunshine.  It's about that time of year that we are secretly loathing those around us that are able to break away for vacation in tropical climates.  It's also about that time of year that our cake (cookie, pie, donut, ice-cream, or, <insert unhealthy snack of choice here>) consumption to physical activity ratio is roughly 12:1.  So, to help you snap out of your post-holiday funk, we have been surfing (no pun intended) the internet for outdoor activities that are not only fun for kids, but also adults and affordable to boot!  We hope the following suggestions get you by until the sun decides to reappear, bringing our Vitamin D levels back to normal!

*Disclaimer: most of the following activities will require bundling up in your warmest duds*

  • Go Ice skating
  • Hit the slopes for some sledding
  • Build a bonfire and make s'mores
  • Take your dog for a walk
  • Give ice-block sledding a try - head to the grocery store to pick up a block of ice, cover with a plastic bag and find the nearest hill!
  • Bundle up, grab the hot cocoa, and enjoy the view from your front porch swing (we realize this isn't necessarily exercise but hey, at least you're outside away from the T.V.)
  • Pack up your lunch and head to a local park, state park, or even your own backyard for a winter picnic!
  • Take a photo expedition to capture the winter landscape!
  • Go on a nature hike
  • Snow shoeing is a fun family outing that all can enjoy!
  • Find a nearby indoor rock climbing gym, most offer affordable day passes

We know that on most winter days the appeal to turn into a hermit and stay indoors is greatly favored; however, it is extremely important for your mental and physical well-being to do your best to include physical activity in your daily routines! Creating a list such as the one above is a great way to motivate yourself to put the donut down, get off the couch, and do your mind, body, and soul a solid (a favor) by getting outside!
