While many of us
enjoy sitting by the cozy fireplace in the winter, eczema sufferers
can dread this time of year. Dry air and cold weather can aggravate
eczema symptoms causing a miserable, itchy rash.
Dry air and harsh temperatures in the winter months can cause
eczema flare ups. The dry air prevents your skin from retaining
moisture, and going from the warm indoors to harsh outdoor
temperatures can irritate your skin.
There are steps you can take to help prevent eczema flare
ups:
- Use a daily moisturizer at least once a day and use
moisture-rich soaps.
- Apply a daily sunscreen and use one designed for sensitive
skin.
- Use a humidifier inside your home, especially if you have
forced-air heat.
- Dress in comfortable fabrics and wear gloves when you go
outside.
- Remove damp clothing as soon as possible after being out in the
snow or rain.
- Avoid washing clothing in harsh detergents. A better choice is
a detergent designed for sensitive skin and free of perfumes and
dyes.
- Stay away from smoke. This includes the fireplace as well as
cigarette smoke which can intensify eczema symptoms.
- In case of a flare-up, use an over-the-counter steroid such as
Corticool 1%
Hydrocortisone Gel to help relieve itching, or a steroid cream
prescribed by your dermatologist.
If you find the eczema is an ongoing problem for you, work with
your doctor to find the proper treatment for you. Everyone's skin
is different and what works for one person may not work for
you.
