washing w tecnuTecnu Original Outdoor Skin Cleanser has been used for over 34 years to remove poison ivy, oak and sumac oil, called urushiol, that causes the miserable, itchy rash.  Over the years, as our loyal customers have recommended Tecnu Original to one another, a few misconceptions have been created.

We want you to continue to have success with Tecnu Original cleanser but don't want you to feel like you've wasted money on the product using it in a way that will not help you. So here are three common misconceptions about Tecnu Original Outdoor Skin Cleanser:

1) Tecnu Original can prevent poison ivy, oak or sumac rash if I put it on before I am exposed to the plants.

Sorry everyone, but this just not true. Tecnu Original is a cosmetic cleanser to wash the oil off of your skin. Layering it on your skin just creates a layer of the detergent and will not prevent a rash. You will need to wipe or wash it off. Think of it like having a layer of soap on your skin. You wouldn't walk around with a layer of soap to prevent getting dirty right?

2) Tecnu Original only works if I use it within 2-8 hours, once I have poison ivy, oak or sumac rash it's too late.

You can use Tecnu Original at any time to remove any urushiol left on your skin. Even once the rash occurs, you can have oil present and it can be spread to other areas of your body. Washing with Tecnu Original will make sure to remove this oil so it won't spread to other areas of your body.

3) Tecnu Original is a medicine to make the itching of poison ivy, oak and sumac rash stop.

This is probably the most common misconception about Tecnu Original Outdoor Skin Cleanser.  Because it works well at removing the rash-causing urushiol, a lot of consumers think it is an anti-itch medicine. However, it is not a drug but a special cosmetic cleanser that is formulated to unlock the bond of urushiol and remove it from your skin, clothing, tools, pets, etc.

We recommend using a product like Calagel Medicated Anti-itch Gel, Corticool Hydrocortisone Gel, or Tecnu Rash Relief Medicated Anti-itch Spray to relieve itching after washing with Tecnu Original.  You can also relieve itching and remove urushiol in one step with Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy Scrub which is a cleanser to remove poison ivy, oak and sumac oil and includes a homeopathic, medicated anti-itch ingredient.

How we recommend using Tecnu Original Outdoor Skin Cleanser:

  • When you know you have been around poison ivy, oak or sumac, take a shower with Tecnu Original to remove any urushiol on your skin.
  • At the first sign of poison ivy, oak or sumac rash, wash with Tecnu Original to remove any urushiol that may spread to other areas of your skin.
  • If your clothing has come in contact with the plants, treat the areas with Tecnu Original like you would use a stain remover. Follow up with washing on the hottest cycle your clothing will allow.
  • If your pets have run through poison ivy, oak or sumac plants, soak a rag with Tecnu Original and wipe down their fur. Follow with a pet shampoo or bath to remove any Tecnu left on their fur.
  • If your tools have come in contact with poison ivy, oak or sumac, wipe Tecnu Original on the items and then wipe or wash off the cleanser.

    I have been told
Tecnu is very effective at removing the pepper oils (ie after being sprayed with pepper spray) from your skin.
It is better not use water first as it just moves the oils around to more of your body.
Tecnu does not stop the immediate burning sensation but reduces the time for recovery somewhat, and keeps you from getting recontaminated which usually happens to most people.
